DAY 5 - Ljubljana (Blue vs. Slovenia Scrimmage)

Today the Blue (Youth) played the Slovenia National Youth Team, in three great matches. The girls showed lots of poise in coming back from behind, and are definitely coming together as a team quite nicely. The girls are really enjoying getting to know the other international teams (Slovenia and Denmark). Tomorrow the girls travel on the bus (with the Slovenia and Danish teams too!) to Pula for the Global Challenge 2008 Opening Ceremony.

DAY 4 - Ljubljana (Junior Scrimmage with Denmark)

Hello everyone - check out the updated slideshow! (sorry I can't make it play the new photos first - I'll try to figure that one out!!). The SCVA Red (Juniors) scrimmaged the Denmark girls today, and played very well. Both teams are having a great time getting to know their international partners - Denmark (Juniors) and Slovenia (Youth).

Innsbruck/Ljubljana

Hello All -

Very soon I will have the girls adding their blogs to the site, internet access/service hasn't been strong so far. We have had a good couple of days, and everything is going smoothly with practices and sightseeing. Today is a bit rainy, but that's ok. We had fabulous weather in Munich and Innsbruck, so we had to expect something...

We arrived in Ljubljana late afternoon yesterday, had practice, ate what seemed like a 20 course meal but was more like 5 courses, killed a little time in the center and headed off to bed. I have to say the young ladies have been doing well so far and I think it is a rather enjoyable trip!

Both teams have had a practice already today, and we (Blue) head back to practice at 3 while the Red team scrimmages the Danish JNT later on this evening. This portion of the trip is designed to let the girls interact with those from foreign countries so we are looking forward to the time we will spend with both the Danish and Slovenian teams.

I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful sights Kevin keeps posting - I will be borrowing some of the girls camera cards to add pictures today and tomorrow. It really is breath taking.

Adijo (good bye in Slovenian)
Val

DAY 3 - Lake Bled & Ljubljana (Slovenia)

We had a misty/rainy ride from Innsbruck through the Alps to Lake Bled, in Slovenia, stopping for some (way fun) bobsled rides and lunch. Lake Bled is spectacular (check out the castle and church on top of the mountain!), with crystal clear water. We had a short ride in to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, where the girls settled into their youth hostel (Hotel Veselovia), which they will be staying in (and training) with the Danish and Slovenian girls teams.

DAY 2 - Innsbruck

We all enjoyed a day of sight-seeing around beautiful Innsbruck, with different groups enjoying a classical concert, bicycle rides, and/or a ride up the mountain via funicular and gondola. Each of the teams practiced in the late afternoon, and we regrouped at GastHaus Martin for a team dinner. Innsbruck (and Hotel Charlotte) has been a very refreshing experience set in an amazingly beautiful Alpine setting.

Greetings

Where to begin……actually we arrived safe and sound in Munich around 8am on the 15th, with only a camera left on the first leg of the flight. It was a pretty uneventful flight, which is what we hope for!

Upon arrival, everyone's luggage made it and we boarded our charter bus to make way to Dachau Concentration Camp. Although this really is a somewhat depressing place to visit, it is well worth the effort. I think everyone was a little amazed at what went on at Dachau. Many of the barracks are gone, but 2 remain for viewing. The museum spells out the history and a short film explains just what took place – I left this film in disbelief– the prisoners endured soooo many horrible things. One of the most somber places to see was the crematorium. But on a lighter note, you can wander the grounds and see the memorials that have been erected for the different faiths, that are quite beautiful considering where they are.

After our history lesson, we ventured off on a 2 hour bus ride to Neushwanstein Castle – how AMAZING! Our bus driver is the best driver EVER and somehow managed to maneuver this large bus into the tiniest parking spot – kudos to him! We spent about 3.5 hours at the castle – having lunch and hiking the trails to the top. The hike up, although steep and difficult, was nothing compared to the descent! Let's just say LEAN BACK! Some of our more adventuresome (we choose to call it this rather than questionable) team members chose to take an alternate path through the forest like scenery….a tumble here, trip there, and roll around in the mud time later, they finally found the paved walkway once again. As the sane group stayed on this paved means of travel, we listened to our jovial group of young ladies trying to trek through the foreign path and met them as they materialized out of the shrubbery!

After another 2 hour bus ride to Innsbruck and some sound sleep, we arrived at our hotel destination. We then went to the center and were able to eat dinner, see some sights and head back to the hotel for some well deserved comfortable sleeping! Day one finally came to a close, feeling as though it was a week!

DAY 1 - Munich, Dachau, Innsbruck!!

Friends and Family - the SCVA tour had a very exciting and full Day 1, arriving in Munich after about 16 hours of travel time, we hopped on a big beautiful bus (driven by a wonderful German driver Wolfgang), and drove straight to Dachau (the flight and customs clearance went VERY quick!). Dachau was a sobering and impactful way to begin - somewhat overwhelming. The drive to Innsbruck was gorgeous, with perfect weather. We arrived at our Hotel Charlotte, refreshed, and took the tram into town for dinner! More updates tomorrow (WiFi permitting!).

Ok, as you all know we are off to the races at 5am! I think Saturday went really well and I know the coaching staffs are very excited about the trip and tournament. Once we reach our destination (likely not until we finally get to Innsbruck) we will update you with our status. Let's go SCVA! :)
