Where to begin……actually we arrived safe and sound in Munich around 8am on the 15th, with only a camera left on the first leg of the flight. It was a pretty uneventful flight, which is what we hope for!
Upon arrival, everyone's luggage made it and we boarded our charter bus to make way to Dachau Concentration Camp. Although this really is a somewhat depressing place to visit, it is well worth the effort. I think everyone was a little amazed at what went on at Dachau. Many of the barracks are gone, but 2 remain for viewing. The museum spells out the history and a short film explains just what took place – I left this film in disbelief– the prisoners endured soooo many horrible things. One of the most somber places to see was the crematorium. But on a lighter note, you can wander the grounds and see the memorials that have been erected for the different faiths, that are quite beautiful considering where they are.
After our history lesson, we ventured off on a 2 hour bus ride to Neushwanstein Castle – how AMAZING! Our bus driver is the best driver EVER and somehow managed to maneuver this large bus into the tiniest parking spot – kudos to him! We spent about 3.5 hours at the castle – having lunch and hiking the trails to the top. The hike up, although steep and difficult, was nothing compared to the descent! Let's just say LEAN BACK! Some of our more adventuresome (we choose to call it this rather than questionable) team members chose to take an alternate path through the forest like scenery….a tumble here, trip there, and roll around in the mud time later, they finally found the paved walkway once again. As the sane group stayed on this paved means of travel, we listened to our jovial group of young ladies trying to trek through the foreign path and met them as they materialized out of the shrubbery!
After another 2 hour bus ride to Innsbruck and some sound sleep, we arrived at our hotel destination. We then went to the center and were able to eat dinner, see some sights and head back to the hotel for some well deserved comfortable sleeping! Day one finally came to a close, feeling as though it was a week!
